Two killed by hit-and-run driver on I-80 in North Highlands

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, CA -- Two men died Monday evening after being struck by a hit-and-run vehicle while outside their disabled car on Interstate 80 in North Highlands, reports CBS Sacramento.

The fatal incident occurred along the westbound lanes of I-80 near Madison Avenue shortly after 6:00 p.m.

California Highway Patrol said two vehicles were disabled on the shoulder of the highway when a westbound GMC ran off the side of the roadway and struck them. Two male occupants, aged 26 and 53, had been tending to one of the vehicles at the time of the crash and were killed.

The passenger of the GMC was transported to a nearby hospital with critical, life-threatening injuries.

Moments after the crash, the driver of the GMC fled the scene on foot and has not been located as of Tuesday morning.
